Frist Art Museum Exhibition Among Best in USA for 2024

Nashville, TN – February 14, 2024 – Wanderlust magazine has named the Frist Art Museum’s current exhibition, “Afrofuturistic Visions: Dreamscapes of Sicasso,” as one of the top museum shows across America for 2024. This recognition honors the groundbreaking work of Nashville artist Sicasso, whose stunning Afrofuturist landscape paintings are featured in the Frist’s visually captivating installation.

Located in the Frist’s dramatic Grand Lobby atrium, the Afrofuturistic Visions exhibition allows guests to immerse themselves in Sicasso’s rich, psychedelic dream worlds celebrating Black culture and history. Five large-scale vinyl prints of the artist’s paintings, curated by student Samaria Jones, envelope visitors in vivid colors and regal, spiritual imagery that pays tribute to iconic Black figures past and present.

Sicasso utilizes AI art generation and a retro-futuristic aesthetic to depict Black individuals standing resilient, confident and triumphant amidst abstract landscapes infused with symbols of African heritage. Her meticulous digital paintings blend surreal mysticism with a vibrant, stylized interpretation of the 1970s.

According to Wanderlust’s editors, the exhibit’s positioning, paired with Sicasso’s breathtaking visuals rendered through emerging technologies, provides an unforgettable experience unlike any other show in the country right now. The magazine praised Sicasso’s aesthetic as “fresh, lively and utterly original – an artistic embodiment of Afrofuturism itself.”

The selection of her Frist exhibition cements 24-year-old Sicasso’s status as a rising art world phenom. It also demonstrates the Frist’s commitment to uplifting vital voices like Sicasso’s and providing a platform for young Black artists to share bold new visions.

The Afrofuturistic Visions exhibit is on display as part of the Frist Art Museum’s presentation of Project Uplift, an internship program sponsored by HCA Healthcare aimed at empowering HBCU students. It is open to the public now through July 28, 2024.
